The Crib

Awake in the dark hours
staring at a bright screen
when I
refuse to go back to sleep

this is my inner child
as defiant as ever
even now to me
as an adult

younger I would have
been spanked once
and dragged off to my crib
by one arm
and the lid tied shut
in more than a dozen knots
by mother who knows
how many to tie
to keep me busy
until she's ready to get
me up

and now I have
untied all the knots
to care for her
nearly 94
tied in her own knots
not sure where she is
in a desparate effort
to get out of the crib
she fell into
the crib she made
all by herself

the older I get
the more I understand
the concept of karma
and wonder what awaits me
for all the trouble
I caused my children
It is a knot in my brain now
that keeps me awake
and even lucid as I am
can't untie the last one
wet with my tears
held fast
by my fingers that fumble
in the early morning
before the bright screen
this child cannot leave
these fears of the dark
future of my childhood
as I wait for anyone
to untie me from my prison
that I made for myself

I Am Hansel

Winter sun lays upon these south windows
unwashed for years
upon which tree shadows make it easy
to see through the filmy dirt

if the shadows were not there
the windows would be a mottled white
opaque to all outside or inside

seeing though air is the same
the shadows of tree or window frame
even others hide what is beyond
what is beneath

unlike the shadows of tree branches
that make the window dirt invisible
we have no such luck
when it comes to shadows that fall
upon the interior walls of our eye

so we must do our best to create
an understanding of our world
inside of minds

quickly, someone flash a light
through all these illusions
and give me what I want
a chance to see beyond what is here
even if only for a minute
so that I may know

the difference between what I see
through dirty windows
and what my eye tells me
is in front and beside me
because I do not trust
anything I see anymore
and even less of what is inside me
or at the end of my arm
fingers probing for something solid
in a dark world
where photons
are the magic of witches
and every wall is made of poisoned sugar

No Moon Tonight

22:55 and just returned
from the Safeway
where Roma tomatoes
were a buck and 29 a pound
and I chatted with a lady
listening to an audio book
on a Fujitzu portable computer
Her son favors hard charging
games at high speed
on lightning Internet

Now, 9 miles west of Rapid City
the yard light sends its orange hue
to the neighbors and beyond
when the howling begins.

I can listen to Chopin
but when the coyotes talk
on top of Norris Peak
there's no chill like an old chill
and I'm in the darkened cave
eyes wide open
spear stick at hand
